Tests at the New York Aikikai

Testing is optional but is a way to gauge and demonstrate your skill at aikido. There are two kinds of tests: yukyusha (white belt) and yudansha (black belt). There are five levels or ranks for yukyusha and nine for yudansha. To test, a prerequisite of a certain number of practice days is needed for each rank. The New York Aikikai holds three yukyusha tests a year and one yudansha test in December.
Before you take a test, please contact one of the Uchi-deshi, verify the number of days you practiced after your last test, and pay the appropriate fee.
If you are a member of the NY Aikikai, you can check the number of hour you have trained at the dojo (when swiping your card) or by logging on to our members area.
If you come from another dojo, please be sure that your instructor attends the testing.
Dan tests are also offered in most major Seminars. Please, refer to Yamada Sensei's Seminar Schedule for possible dates.
If you have questions, please call the dojo organizing the seminar, or contact us.
